Also the same reasons that we don't want to always remain stale on things (which we seem to be doing lately). If 1.6 is truely a disaster, we should try to figure out if the automake people consider it one also -- ie, will 1.7 have the same issues and we must live with this change; or 1.7 will fix them and be more like 1.5 in what ever respect you've heard about.
