# halt
and
# shutdown -h now

both halt the system, but before doing the usual syncing of disks.   This
casues file systems to dismount incorrectly and therefore causes fsck to run
against them all on the next boot.

Source tree was pulled on the night of November 19th, 1999.   Pulled all available source code, inclding docs and ports using "cvsupit"
Then did make world.   Noticed this a few days later after running my normal "halt" to stop the system.
