 Addendum: 
 
 - Changing the scheduler yielded nothing, as you expected.
 
 - This was over TCP, we never used UDP. We mounted the systems with 
   these options: rw,nfsv3,tcp,intr,nolockd,bg 
 
 - The ethernet-device drivers are "em" on all machines.
