not just 9.* but with some machines there are problems with CD/DVD drive

switch to loader prompt and type

set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0

worked with 8.*

maybe. i don't use installer at all. i boot working FreeBSD system by any 
means (live CD, pendrive, NFS) and unpack my builds from tarballs.
