When= i log in with gdm it seems to do entries in /var/run/utmp which uptime sca= ns. This gives me an output like: >=20 > uptime: /dev/:0: No such file or directory > 10:39PM up 1 day, 4:39, 4 users, load averages: 1.36, 1.17, 1.09 This is due to the sessreg command that gdm runs in PreSession. It's debatable as to whether this is a bug in gdm or in w/uptime. The sessreg manpage says that gdm is going it correctly. If you edit /usr/X11R6/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default, and remove the "-l $DISPLAY" option from the sessreg command, this won't happen. However, IMHO, I think w should be fixed to recognize X displays.
