The only thing that got it working for us was to do a clean installation with -current. After that Staroffice 5.0 worked but there's still some problem with java when we were trying to register the program via Staroffice itself. Otherwise, it seems ok. BTW I tried to upgrade my laptop from 2.2.7 to current, just to get Staroffice running, and that didn't work. I suspect there is some problems with the upgrade from a.out to elf.
