Are you sure you're using amd64 and not i386?

% uname -a
FreeBSD 8.0-BETA2 #0 r196086: Sat Aug  8 17:22:29 CDT 2009     root@myhost:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC

% sysctl -a | grep hw.....mem
hw.physmem: 8571977728
hw.usermem: 7794733056
hw.realmem: 9395240960

What motherboard/CPU?  What does the BIOS report for memory?  Let's see
the first part of dmesg from a verbose boot.
