MAKEDEV makes the devices in your current working directory. eg:
happy-idiot-talk:/var/tmp:# mkdir dev
happy-idiot-talk:/var/tmp:# cd dev
happy-idiot-talk:/var/tmp/dev:# /dev/MAKEDEV snd0
happy-idiot-talk:/var/tmp/dev:# ls -la
total 2
