I would first look at ifconfig, make sure their is a selected media type, their is an IP, netmask. Then make sure you have a default route(netstat -rn). If all of that looks good, swap the ethernet cable. If still no change look at /etc/pcmcia/config.opts and make sure that their is at least 2 spair IRQ's allocated, My 3Com 10MB/COAX NIC likes IRQ 7 and 9, my wi-fi adapter likes 11 (just an FYI, I currently have Linux on my laptop so the config.opts file could be in a different location).
