Some IDE drives I've seen don't distinguish "master" and "single"
modes.  If your drive doesn't have a jumper setting for "single" try
"master" in preference to "slave".

IDE is implemented in cheap and nasty ways.  Don't forget to hate it
even as you buy it for cheapness!
