When Kermit exits it drops the DTR line, which causes the modem to reset. You need to set your modem to ignore this; the way I do that is to send at&d0 to my modem. That of course means if you kill off your PPP daemon the modem doesn't hang up (since it's ignoring DTR), but since I do a modem reset when I redial (i.e. I send "+++", wait for "OK", then send "ATZ" at the start of my PPP scripts) it's not been a problem for me.
