I have added some stuff on KDE; the diff is available at http://www.lpt.ens.fr/~rsidd/handbook-x11-chapter.diff I'll also send it to Murray directly. It's mainly on configuring kdm (to give the user a choice of desktop at login time, etc) and anti-aliasing. I've also added a bit to what you wrote about .xinitrc: noting that if you're running xdm or kdm, an .xinitrc file will not work, you need an .xsession file (or the ability to choose via the display manager itself). I know that what I wrote about an .xsession file works but I'm not sure whether it's the recommended way or the best way, if not somebody else can correct it...
