Well, before hand the partition wasn't known to fdisk at all.
To boot Linux I was using a floppy. I was getting "device not
configured" messages on trying mount. I did a bit of RTFM and
concluded I was safe to do the above - but I want to avoid
having to go through the painful task of booting a linux distro
and getting an admin shell - difficult without so-called rescue
disks (unlike FreeBSD).

That's what I thought would happen. But it's always as well to
check. I'm away from the machine right now but I'll try this out
on Monday.
