Thanks for the reply on this one; your suggested commands reminded me of the (many) times I've deinstalled Mozilla and got messages about two files that did not match their MD5 checksums - seems to me those were the two files, "regxpcom" and "regchrome". More experiments are necessary before I leap to any conclusions on this one, but the permissions on those two files are currently "0644".
