I had same problem and patched the fxp driver manually using 3.0-RELEASE patch found somewhere http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi. The patch applied almost cleanly to 3.1-STABLE. I think the 3.1-STABLE now have bridge enabled fxp driver, the 4.0-CURRENT definitely have. You seem to use 3.1-RELEASE kernel, not stable, how you downloaded 3.1-STABLE?
