(I recovered using a pxe netboot.) Regarding ntpd.drift, after adding "driftfile /var/db/ntpd.drift" to /etc/ntp.conf ntpd only complains about "format error frequency file /var/db/ntpd.drift" in the syslog (I put a zero-sized file with owner/group ntpd there).
