echo 'cvs -z 6 -q' >> ~/.cvsrc

This causes cvs to be a bit more quiet, and uses compression.  (Not
necessary if you're using SSH's built-in compression, but not
necessarily a bad idea.)  (It's difficult to get CVS to use SSH with
arguments, so use the above).
