M$ isn't gonna help much...

You didn't say, but if you're using a FAT filesystem, 
their's a free utility that will shrink an existing partition without 
damaging data.  Think it's called fips and is available at 
http://www.freebsd.org

If you use it, check the archives--there's been some sort of problem 
with mounting FAT filesystems from freebsd if the partition is over 1 
GB--think it's been fixed but find out--it causes data loss.

ASFAIK, Partition Magic is the only fdisk type utility that will allow you 
to repartition and shrink an NTFS disk.   Since it also changes the 
cluster size you can avoid the problem that fips has.  Personally I 
like Partition Magic--very nice little utility.
