Choose amd64 by default, unless you have a specific application that requires an i386 system. Even if you have less than 4GiB RAM. Be aware that most 32bit apps can be run on a 64bit system. The converse is not true. Also, it's a lot easier to pop in some extra RAM sticks, than it is to convert from i386 to amd64 and then pop in some extra RAM sticks...
