Fortune had a separate DEL key; the backspace key mapped to ^H. Also, almost every terminal (remember those?!) in use atleast until early eighties sent ^H when you presed the backspace key. Only recently (in the last year) I gave up the battle and switched to using ^C and my interrupt char.
