I have a 4.10-BETA machine with Perl 5.6.1, and the Perl plug-in loads
just fine for me. In fact:

nm -D /usr/X11R6/lib/xchat/plugins/perl.so | grep xchat_plugin_init
00056500 T xchat_plugin_init
