Instead of setting the security level at "0", temporarily try kern_securelevel_enable="NO". Then run your port make again, and if you get the problem, cut and paste the lines above the "Error code 1." Those lines can indicate what part of the make the port was in, what it was trying to do, and what the problem it faced when it got stopped. Are your ports up-to-date? Sometimes an out-of-date dependency can stop you out. You said you tried gmake. What kinds of tricks did you do to try to solve the problem before you came to the list with your question?
