Darren... |I would look at /boot/loader/defaults/loader.conf. Please be aware that |you should not edit this file, It gives instructions on what to do with |changes. I am running -current but I think that is should be similar. Thanks for the pointer! I appreciate your time and trouble. I did 'man loader' and 'man boot??' and searched the mail archives, but wasn't able to come with anything apropos ;). So for now, I just insert the boot.flp and at the first sign of the "twirling baton" I hit a key and type 1:wd(1,a)/kernel. It works but it's a pain ;-).
