Quite why you are typing `find . -name "*"' rather than just `find .', is also unclear. > find . -name "*" | xargs grep "SYSCTL\.*maxfiles" Try, find . | xargs grep "SYSCTL.*maxfiles" (from /usr/src/sys of course) > don't find anything, just searching for SYSCTL ends up searching through > binaries.
