Try the fetchmail port.  I believe it is the direct descendent of the
popper program the book referred to.  After it's installed, type

man fetchmail

It's pretty self explanatory.  Also, the file /etc/sendmail.cf is
decently documented - set the DS and DM options, minimum, and the Dj$
option as well (I didn't used to have to set Dj$, but suddenly I do).
