I didn't notice your previous mail, so maybe I misinterpreted your words here.
Did you re-compile kernel and failed to mount root and swap afterwards ? 
In this case, you are not alone; this happened to me twice, on two
different machines. The new device names didn't work and I had to change
them back to the 2.0R device names.
