Did you rehash (if running csh/tcsh)?
Do you have /usr/X11R6/bin in your PATH?
Does the link XF86_xxx -> X exist in /usr/X11R6/bin?
Run sh -x /usr/X11R6/bin/startx explicitly and see what happens.
