That's a problem, too. But the problem I was thinking of is the one of dependencies on a binary object for which there is no source. It's precisely analogous to the precompiled package issue, particularly if the package you are wanting to install is source with binary components for the kernel, and you want to subsequently statically link it into the kernel.
