I think you would find in a benchmark test that performance
in disk systems is due to the hardware configuration, not the software.
You could build a system where either approaches outperformed
The other simply based on the hardware configuration.

What hardware RAID V gives you is the ability to walk up to
a running server, pull out a failed drive, replace it with a
new one, and walk off without shutting down the server.  Your
probably not going to be able to do that with vinum.  If you
don't need that capability, then your correct in asking the
question "why pay for it"
