I think you would find in a benchmark test that performance in disk systems is due to the hardware configuration, not the software. You could build a system where either approaches outperformed The other simply based on the hardware configuration. What hardware RAID V gives you is the ability to walk up to a running server, pull out a failed drive, replace it with a new one, and walk off without shutting down the server. Your probably not going to be able to do that with vinum.
