Hi,sometimes I come across a link to FreeBSD.I always wonder what kind of an OS it is.I got a question,or two.First:Can I run Windows98 and FreeBSD,or can I switch between the two OS' ?? You can switch between the two OSes at bootup. I know with Linux you can load that from within Windows with a specail utility but I'm not sure of FreeBSD on that point. 2nd:If I want to install FreeBSD on my computer,is a Pentium II 300MHz processor with MMx Technology,160MB RAM,32X CD-ROM,One 1.44' floppy drive, operating Windows 98 1st edition. I'll assume that you mean is your computer fast enough/compatible. The answer is yes. FreeBSD will run on almost nothing (as will most Intel Unix-like OSes). In general I believe the bare minimum is a 386 with 4mb of ram. Although I do believe that the installer of FreeBSD v4.0 and greater requires up to 8 mb of ram but you seem to be doing a little better than that. 3rd:When FreeBSD is installed, can I play games that do not say anything about operating their game under FreeBSD? Yes and no. Yes, some games will run. The games that could run and say nothing of FreeBSD will most likely be either Linux games or games for other BSDs. Not all games for Linux and the other BSDs will run and no Windows games will run in BSD natively. In many cases you can get a executable for a game and uses the windows cd to get the data from. Examples of this are Quake 1,2,3 and Unreal Tournament. 4th:What's the difference between FreeBSD and Windows 98?? Apples and Oranges. Windows 98 is a desktop OS that give you very little control however lets you play lots of games since there is much development for it. Also, the Windows OS will have more mainstream industrial Applications (Animation programs, Graphical tools, Office) FreeBSD is a server OS that will give you almost full control of what it does. Granted this comes at a cost - you have to know what your doing. There are not as many applicaions/games for it however more then likely most of the great quality applications are free. Ie. Adobe Photoshop cost over $500, Gimp (almost the same thing, it can even use Adobe Filters) is free. 5th:Once FreeBSD is installed, can I install Windows 98 later on if I do not like FreeBSD?? You can wipe out FreeBSD at anytime. If you intend to install Windows 98 after installing FreeBSD take note that Windows 98 will over write the boot sector not allowing you to boot into FreeBSD. In order to avoid this you should create a boot disk for FreeBSD. More importantly though, before jumping feet first into the FreeBSD world it would be benefitical for you to read more up on FreeBSD. You should go through some of the FAQs and it'd also be good to read up under some of the support areas of some sites such as http://www.freebsd.org and http://www.freebsddairy.org I hope you answer all of my questions, thanks! There ya go, cheers. - Cuyler P.S.
