A good debugging technique here is to make a .php file with the following in it: Then look at it in a web browser. It will display information about your php installation. Normally, if you haven't compiled in myswl support, you'll get a Call to unknown function type error rather than a hang, though. If you haven't got mysql support in there, fix that first (install the databases/php[4|5]-mysql port). If you still have probs, mail the list again.
