Now the big question is how do these 2 Lynx boxes differ? Actually, the two machines might be identical and the *only* difference is the type of CDR media being used. Older CDROM drives do not play well with a lot CDR media (depending on process type and dye color) because it has a lower reflectance than "Mastered" CDROM discs. There is a work around; there is a CRD media called "Diamond DISC" or "Diamond Media" which has superior reflectance -looks exactly like a "Mastered" CDROM. I've had "Diamond Media" work in nearly every ancient drive I've tried, even when the manufacturer *officially* states that CRD is not supported and even in drives that predate the creation CRD by many years.
