	my apologies.  you are clearly correct.
	gawd how did i miss that....must hvae jumped right to the 
	broadcast address.

	Arnold J. Rimmer you have got to fix your netmask.
	take a look in /etc/rc.conf.
	try:

	ifconfig_ed0="inet 192.168.1.2  netmask 255.255.255.0...."

	"..." because i dont know if you have additional arguments or not.
	my 3c509 has AUI/BNC/UTP so i use
	ifconfig_ep0="inet 192.168.250.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 link2"
