Does being offsite have anything to do with it?   Are the permissions 
ok?  Does it need execute? --nope, just tried it...

su-2.00# ls -l |grep snp
crw-------  1 root    wheel      53,   0 Jul  7 15:38 snp0

I do appreciate your time on this.  It's not really that critical, at 
least now, but I'd like to have it available in the future.
