All UNIX systems will accept _at least_ eight characters, but some will
accept more.  The FreeBSD handbook says that user names on FreeBSD should be
limited to eight characters.

Even if you have a UNIX system that will accept more than eight characters
in a user name, it isn't always a good idea to exceed that length, because
many programs may break if they encounter user names longer than eight
characters.
