Here's a summary of responses, in case anyone else has the same question. Lots of people (on and off list) recommended the IBM Thinkpad 600. Various resellers in the UK (e.g. Morgan Computers, www.morgancomputers.co.uk) have refurbed 600s for around 430 GBP (about 630 USD), including 3-6 months warranty. There were also a lot of recommendations of eBay. I'm a little wary of buying this kind of thing on auction sites.
