Nope, the problem turned out to be that I was mistakenly assuming
that the card retained the WEP key that was entered via Orinoco's
utility on the Windows-based laptop. It doesn't. The solution was
to enter the key on bootup in /etc/start_if.wi0:
wicontrol -i wi0 -k 0xXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
