Thanks for the data point, Well, something has definitely gone south in the SMP world at least for my box and others. Here are some more experiments and some verbose dmesg outputs for people to gander at. Again, a summary of the box--An Abit BP6 dual 550Mhz Celeron. BX, 128Mb RAM, NCR scsi card, running -stable as of Jun 2 (no problems noticed in this kernel). I CVSuped the code base as of 10:43am this (Monday) morning and built world and built a kernel using the same config file as the current functioning kernel. Also built a kernel with that same file sans SMP. I manually copied the two kernels in to / and booted the new SMP one. BZZZT. Instant lockup 2 seconds after I logged into the console to type 'sync'. The only thing that worked was hitting ALT-F? to get to a new virtual console, but then no other keys worked. Ctrl-Alt-Del did not work. A hard reset was required. I did capture the boot messages though in the syslog. Those are attached. Then I booted a single-proc version of the same kernel. NO PROBLEMS! Stable as a rock. Its boot messages as well as my boot messages from the June 2 kernel are also attached. If nobody has any bright ideas from staring at these, then I'll start performing a binary search CVSup'ing code from now until back to my "known working" kernel to determine what broke. I diff'ed the attached dmesg outputs and all I can see that's noticably different are interrupt numbers in various places. [1st file = known good kernel, 2nd = broken SMP, 3rd = good UP ] ps: I've got an Asus P2B-DS with two Pentium III's in there.
