Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I booted from the install floppy and after going through a few menus in order to select installation media and what distributions to install (I just selected "man", it seemed safe), the install program was finally satisfied and installed bootmanager for me, then bombed on the rest of the install. I exited, rebooted, and now bootmanager is there just fine! /raj
