I guess it's all a matter of taste, but as for myself they've pretty much worked rather well especially the apache and the mod_ ports. I personnally would prefer that all of the addons were mod_addon rather than the few that are part of a base install. As for doing it your self there's nothing wrong with that, but the company I work for has reinventing the wheel isseus so again the ports are right for me.
