Whatever we come up with should be relatively compatible with V4L. On the other hand, improvements are not a bad idea; ideally they should be of a form that the V4L people would be prepared to take on board. The real issue, though, is: who is going to do this work? I only have limited time, and I haven't seen much activity from others in this area. Given that, we shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel.
