If it shows up in ifconfig, then the driver has been successfully probed and attached. You'll need to provide a bit more information if we're to figure out why you can't ping -- like, what host were you trying to ping, and do you have routing to it; do you actually have a working link between the card and whatever it's plugged into; what is the exact error message, if any?
