Have you checked the kernel probe messages to see whether the kernel detects the serial port you're using correctly? You might want to try the simpler approach of setting up user PPP directly. Things like Gnome are very pretty, but as with anything that tries to hide the details from you, they can make diagnosing problems more difficult than it needs to be.
