You have to make sure that your machine is using a network card that is
recognized by the kernel on the boot floppy.  (You can see the list of
recognized devices during visual configuration.)

If you're using a PCI NIC, you should have no problems.  However, if you're
using an ISA NIC (ed0, etc) you need to make sure that the settings for the
card are set appropriately during the visual configuration, otherwise the
card will not be detected.
