One rather common mistake is to put the ISO file on a CD as a file rather than burning the image (which is in fact a binary copy of a CD file system) to the disk. Most, if not all, CD writer programs have a "burn image" option or similar. If you burned the ISO correctly, your Mac should see a number of files and folders on the CD.
