Do you have /dev/wd2s1e in existence? I don't know what version of FreeBSD you are using, but I do remember having this kind of difficulty with earlier versions of 3.x. If you don't have all of the device entries in the /dev directory for wd2, then this would cause problems. Also, in another window/virtual console, you could check to see if /newdisk is getting created by sysinstall, and if not, make it yourself and try again.
