Of course if your secondary isn't working then shutting off the primary is
somewhat fatal.

Much better way to check is to query the secondary specifically.

e.g.

dig @yoursecondary your.domain.com

if you make changes to the primary you can use the above command to check
that those changes have been picked up by the secondary.
