For some reason I did not catch the beginning of this thread but it sounds like what I experienced with gdm2 after upgrading to XFree86-4.3.0. The gdmlogin process was eating up memory and causing swap to be used, which almost _never_ happens on this machine. I found that rebuilding/reinstalling fontconfig solved the problem for me.
