I'm using Adaptec 2940UW that way. I had to explicitly disable wide negotiation in the bios for the narrow devices to get it to work. Note that the 2940UW has both wide & narrow internal connectors but only a wide external connector. Fortunately, wide-->narrow connector adapters seem to work. (Also, you can use only 2 of the 3 connectors at once.)
