There are solutions for *BSD and Linux:

For Linux at least you may also take a look at:

http://www.realtimelinux.org/

Trying real-time with a "normal" Linux kernel is shurely waisting your time. I don't
know much about *BSD kernels since I'm pretty new to *BSD.
